Thanks to all who responded.
The meeting with DEHS went well. I showed him a probe and shim stack,
so he understands what a broken sample might contaminate. Essentially,
based on the amount of depleted uranium that will be used, he will not
require us to observe strict radiation protocols (e.g., not everyone who
enters the lab has to be trained). The main difference for us is that if
a sample breaks, we call DEHS to do (or supervise) the clean up instead of
doing it ourselves. What we decided based on all your feedback:
--the user will use only one instrument; it will not have a sample changer
--she will be given her own spinner and put her tube in the spinner before
coming to the lab (this is where most of our users break tubes)
--she will use a teflon insert (available from Wilmad or New Era)
--if for some reason, she cannot use an insert, she will use a brand new
tube
--she will not leave the instrument unattended; if she needs to leave,
adequate signage will be posted
Modifications may be necessary as we learn more.
