Wow! As usual, I am humbled by all the helpful responses from this group.

I probably did not make it clear that the instrument/computer is fine and does not need to be replaced; THEY just don't want it on the network.

SGI never supported USB memory devices or external DVD burners for the O2, but apparently there is/was a third party that developed a DVD burner (legasys ?). I'll check into that, but I am told it was rather expensive as a removable media solution.

The overwhelming response was to form a small sub-network with a separate PC/Mac/Linux Box. Several suggested that the extra box could be used as a bridge between the outside and the NMR network, but I'm pretty sure THEY have shot that down repeatedly over the years. So, my second computer will also be off the network, but at least data can be put onto moveable media of some sort.
One interesting commercial product was mentioned: a SNAP server, which I found at: http://www.overlandstorage.com/products/network-attached-storage/index.aspx#tope
This looks like an interesting device. But given all the old Macs and PCs laying around here, it'll probably be a vanilla box networked to the O2.

Thanks again for the helpful responses,
Dan
