Does anyone out there have experience with operating a Unity system
with a Sun Ultra host?
Our Unity-300 has been operating for five years with a Sun Ultra-10,
using the same SCSI cable we used for the previous host (Sparc IPC)
plus a simple adaptor at the Sun end, and a "cheap" SCSI card (Sun
PCI Single Channel Single Ended SE Ultra/Wide SCSI card, part number
X5010A or 375-0097). Recently, in the course of fixing a
communication failure, we tried using the "fancy" SCSI card
recommended by Varian (Sun PCI 10/100 Ethernet and SE Ultra/Wide SCSI
card, part number X1032A or 501-5656). Exactly as Varian predicted
in their original notes on the upgrade, the Sun will not boot with
the "fancy" SCSI card unless the SCSI cable is replaced with a newer
one supplied by Varian (with adaptor at the differential box
end). So we bought the new cable kit from Varian ($280), but the
communication still fails. In the end, we replaced the "cheap" SCSI
card with a new one and, using the old cable, the communication was
restored. We later noticed that a voltage regulator was fried on the
old SCSI card.
What puzzles me is why the "fancy" SCSI card with the new cable kit
from Varian is dead as a doornail. We actually tried two of these
"fancy" cards, so it's unlikely that the card is defective. Does
anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Neil
