Dear AMMRL:
My agency is planning on purchasing for our lab a research 600 MHz and a
general use 400 MHz NMR, trading in our 12 year old Varian Unity 500. I am
trying to convince the powers that be (my bosses superiors) that it is better
for us to upgrade our current 12 year old Unity 500 to an INOVA keeping just
the magnet, versus purchasing a totally new 400 MHz instrument which would
cost the same amount of money (about $350k). THEY say, among a long list of
things, that the Unity is worth something as a Trade In when we purchase the
600. Have any of you first hand knowledge of whether any of the 3 NMR
vendors give trade-in value for a Unity 500 with original equipment (no
PFG's, unshielded magnet)? Since I work for the federal government I believe
we cannot sell our instrument but we can trade it in. What is a Varian Unity
500 worth to Varian? Would Jeol or Bruker even consider a trade in? My
thought is that it really is not worth anything to them and therefore since
there is no advantage in trading it in we are far better off keeping the
magnet and upgrading the electronics and probe. Your thoughts would be
greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Patrick Hays
