large metal object

Powers that be are considering moving an old EPR magnet out of my lab. If
we go the conventional way out, through the door, it will involve waltzing
this behemoth past both of my supercons - within five feet of my 300/89 and
within a couple meters of my 500/51, or roughly through the 15 gauss lines
of each.

My preference is for them to knock down a wall to get out and stay away
from my magnets. Is that overly cautious? Can the pathway described above
be followed without risking a quench or cracked dewar neck?

Another question: I just bought Varian's 2nd-to-last HAL differential
interface box. I don't know anybody else that has spares and the word is
that they can't be built anymore. Is there a workaround or will HAL-based
systems be doomed? (B.t.w., owners of HAL-based systems should not upgrade
to Solaris 7. The SCSI drivers for the diff box are not there.)

Bill

P.S. MR Resources was nice enough to send me a shirt even though I
couldn't make it to ENC. Yay, MRR !
