Thanks to all the institutions that responded to my survey request for Canadian liquid nitrogen costs. The total range (excluding U of Manitoba), including taxes and other charges, was $0.40/l to $1.15/l, with a mean value of $0.75/l (n = 12). In a few cases, the taxes were estimated based on PST, and net GST paid by educational institutions. As expected, the higher values were usually paid by smaller and more remote institutions. At one institution, liquid nitrogen costs are currently provided by the faculty (no direct charge to NMR facility).
At the University of Manitoba, we are currently paying $1.37/l from BOC or $2.12/l from a bulk storage tank in our Physics department, so I'm hoping that the information in the survey will enable us to negotiate a better price.
Thanks!
