Thanks to all who responded!

I had forgotten to mention that I checked Wilmad, but couldn't find
their standard sample on their website- not that they may still have
it available as I may have missed it. I forgot to consider CIL
(Cambridge Isotope Labs) as another common source of NMR standards-
they do have it available on their website.

Here is a summary of responses to date:

1. Several folks had their sealed standard gramicidin samples they
were willing to lend me- very generous indeed!

2. The tripeptide prolyl-leucyl-glycinamide was recommended as a
substitute- I can send you the ordering information is you missed the
original post (it went to the group). Cyclosporin was also
recommended in this regard. These are good suggestions, but the
professor here has his heart set on gram-S!

3. Other possible suppliers include: Pfaltz & Bauer Chemicals,
Molecular Probes, Spectrum Chemicals Product List, Fluorochem,
labantibiotics.com and James Hinton's group at U Arkansas (url
available on request- good application of gram-S in NMR).

Thanks much to Jane, David G, David L, Lew C, NJW, Russell H,
Alvicler M, Manfred P, Kurt W, Jose M, Joe D, Bob B, Jessica D, Phil
D. and anyone else I may have missed (sorry!).

Since the prof here would like the students to possibly obtain MS
data on gram-S as well, I may take up one of several generous offers
for a small sample of the peptide. BTW- the most common solvent for
the NMR standard is DMSO-D6 (sealed tube of course).

Thanks again!
Paul
