VNMR accounting/solaris 9 login problems

Greetings!

I have two minor software problems I'd like to see if anyone else has come
across; so far the folks at Varian and Sun haven't been able to help much.

The first involves a problem with the VNMR_accounting tool which
mysteriously stopped working last month. In this case its operating under
vnmr 6.1C and solaris 9. After my last accounting "update and save" in early
February, the tool no longer opened. Loaded the latest vnmr patch update
(which has a patch for a accounting problem), but it also turned out that
the current /var/adm/wtmpx file in which apparently the accounting macro
console_login uses to generate the vnmr log no longer existed. So last week
I went ahead and renamed the last "dated" copy of (ie, wtmpx.date) to wtmpx,
and the accounting tool opens with the previously calculated times. Hitting
"recalc" initially did not add the additional time used since feb to
present, however since then the log activity for the last week has been
added so it appears that all is well (except for the 7 week gap in billing,
of course). I'll see when I hit "update and save" tomorrow. My question: is
they any other file that has login information which I can used to
guess-timate my login activity for this lost time?

My second question involves a "bug" which has prevented me in finishing my
migration over to Solaris 9 on my other spectrometer. In this case, with the
exception of root logins, all other logins take EXACTLY 60 seconds before
the desktop shows up. (which is a painfully long time to wait on a
spectrometer in a rapid, open access environment) The system appears to work
fine afterwards. I thought it may had something to do with loading the
desktop, however failsafe logins also take 60 seconds to give a terminal
window. Additionally I also thought it may had something to do with
migrating my old login info (passwd, shadow, and group) from the older
operating system ( 2.8, although this procedure worked successfully on my
other 2.9 upgrade), however brand spanking new user accounts do the same
thing. Short of starting from scratch and reloading Solaris, has anyone else
experienced the same problem or have anyother suggestions?

I suppose I should have broke this up into two posts for ammrl archival
sake, so if you respond to only one of the two questions, adjust the
subject line accordingly.

Thanks!

Neal
