I think you should first of all check if your SGI CD-driver supports
CDRW format. Some old CD-Drivers don't.

I don't think CDRW(CD rewritable) is required for multiple writing
sessions. CDR supports multi-session. Just keep the CDR open for
appending new sessions and it will do.

We use nero here on a windows pc to back up data acquired on a SGI Indy.
Data on SGI were shared to pc via nfs & samba, and this works well.

And personally I don't like CDRW much after trying two. For direct
copying, you have to give it a DirectCD format, which leaves only ~530M
space available for data. The worst thing of all is the inherently low
reflection of light of CDRW(only 10~20% of that of CDR) which may cause
trouble on an old CD-driver whose electronic units are aged, whose laser
intensity may is low.
