AMMRL: Gemini Console and Room temperature changes

Hi Everyone!!

I work with an old Varian Gemini 2000 300 MHz (R2D2 magnet). I recently discovered my 1H PW creeping up with the arrival of the summer weather. We have an air conditioning unit in the NMR room but I have noticed at least a 5 degree temperature fluctuation depending on the activities of adjacent rooms and the weather outside. I pulled the PW amplifier and the 1H transmitter board out of the console and did not see any visible problems with the boards but the boards seemed quite warmer than I expected. I then reseated them into the console and re-measured the PW, which did not change. It then occurred to me that maybe the room was getting too warm. The thermostat was set to 67F but the actually measured temperature at the console was 72F. I dropped the thermostat to 60F (which dropped the temperature at the console to about 63F). The 1H PW also dropped back to the expected length.

Herein lies the problem, the bulk of the work I do is in DMSO-d6... many of us know that DMSO-d6 freezes at 64F. I came into work this morning to discover that most of my solutions I had prepped for this week were crystallized. There is no variable temperature control on this unit. Does anyone know if there is something that I can add to the DMSO-d6 to slightly raise the freezing point without changing my 1H or 13C spectra? Or is there some type of cooling add-on that I could put on the Gemini console to adequately cool it without having to have the room so cold?

Thank you in advance for all your help!!
