research organization of Novartis, we are committed to discovering
innovative medicines to cure disease and improve human health. By hiring
the best academic, biotech, and pharmaceutical trained scientists, we
have fostered and atmosphere for drug discovery where innovation is
rewarded. It is ultimately the talent of the individual that determines
our success, while our state-of-the-art technologies and resources
enable these ideas to be realized.

NIBR has sites in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Emeryville, CA; Basel,
Switzerland; Horsham, UK; and Shanghai, China. Our Emeryville location
focuses on early drug discovery efforts for the Oncology Disease Area
and offers a variety of positions in Biology, Chemistry, and functions
such as Technology, Patents, Research Sciences and other areas that
support our scientific resources.

About Structural Chemistry:
The NIBR Emeryville Structural Chemistry group is responsible for
actively pursuing the structures of macromolecular drug targets either
as apo-proteins or in complex with lead compounds to help guide
structure-based drug design, and actively participates in the drug
discovery process. The group also provides biophysics and solutions
studies support for drug discovery projects.

About the position:

o The successful candidate will be an integral member of drug discovery
teams and will assist in the execution of receptor-ligand interaction
studies by biophysical methods.
o He or she will work closely with the scientists in protein
biochemistry, computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and protein
crystallography in providing support for structure-based drug design.
o He or she will provide hands-on NMR sample preparation, as well as NMR
data acquisition and processing, focused on assessing ligand-binding and
analyzing the solution structures of proteins and protein:ligand complexes.
o The candidate will help to establish an in-house NMR lab consisting of
a 600 MHz spectrometer with associated computing and robotics.

The ideal candidate will have:

o A B.A. or M.S. or equivalent in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or Molecular
Biology
o At least 3 years (M.S.) or 5 years (B.A.) of work experience with
demonstrated success in biophysical techniques
o Experience in preparation of biomolecular samples for NMR data
collection, as well as data collection as applied to ligand-based studies
o A background in protein biochemistry and biophysical characterization
of protein:ligand interaction, particularly ITC, DSC, and surface
plasmon resonance

o Experience in protein biochemistry and fragment-based screening is
desirable
o Strong communication skills

o The ability to work in large, multidisciplinary drug discovery teams
