Brief update on the salary survey: I had forgotten that I did a survey in
1998 as well as 1994. Multiplying the 1994 mean by 1.03^4 gave the 1998
mean of $53,430. Doing the same for the 1998 mean would predict $58,384 but
the data are coming in so far have a (US academic) mean of about $62.5K - -
Will wait until late July at the earliest to put everything together.

OLD BUSINESS - BROKEN CDE SCREEN LOCK
As far as I can tell, no one has a handle on this one. I find the the
screen lock breaks at the same time VNMR's makeuser script begins to fail.
Also, on at least one system (andy), admintool fails to do its job writing
the proper info to /etc/passwd, /etc/group, and /etc/shadow. I can find no
evidence of an intrusion.
Am applying patches and will do a system reload (followed immediately by
installing TCP wrappers) if the patches don't work.
NEW BUSINESS - VNMR SESSIONS ON MACS USING MI/X
As a result of your wonderful coaching, I have data directories from barney
(spectrometer host) mounted on helen (workstation) and users are enjoying
processing their data from their desks and then having helen send the
output to their networked printers. (Maybe this barney-helen thing is what
has andy so upset.) Users are happy with the X-server MI/X for PC and it's
a steal at $25.

The Chemistry Undergraduate Computer Lab has installed MI/X on some G4's
running MacOS 9-something. It works sort of okay (problem with spectrum
display refresh after expansion) if the user is logged in as unrestricted.
However, the Computer Lab administrator understandably wants to put
restrictions on the students and as soon as you restrict the student
account, MI/X can't find its fonts and won't run.
I don't understand Macintosh computers. Anybody have the answer? We want to
be teaching VNMR to undergrads this Fall and that existing computer
facility would be good to use.
