AMMRL salary survey

Hello friends.

I have not performed a salary survey since 1994 and we are overdue for one.
For you newer members, I have been the self-appointed salary survey person
for AMMRL since 1992. Because I have proved trustworthy in not blabbing
about any of the raw data, the Steering Committee seems disposed to have me
continue to do this.

In the past, it has been enough to multiply old salaries by 1.03^n where n
is the number of years since the old data were used. This data has, in the
past, correlated well with salary trends reported in Chemical & Engineering
News by the ACS and also with Society for Applied Spectroscopy's data.

It is past time to see whether we are keeping pace. Since I am also
sometimes asked to write letters recommending salaries for NMR
professionals, I should have current data available. This is a service I
offer to all of you.

Prior experience has informed me that degree level doesn't matter (most
hold the Ph.D. but some of the best don't), so I will ask "years since the
baccalaureate degree" to match that field in the ACS reports.

Please email your salary data in confidence to me, wstevens_at_siu.edu, with
"salary" in the subject line. Cut and paste into your message:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
AMMRL SALARY SURVEY 2001

(1)Your name

(2)Your institution

(3)Years since the baccalaureate

(4)Total MHz of your facility

(5)Number of people reporting to you

(6)Your gross annual salary in $US

(7)whether low, medium, or high cost of living where you are

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

ACS's data always comes out in July. If anyone runs across data from SAS,
please let me know and we'll figure out a way to get it to me.

Remember, I am the only one who gets to see the raw data and, in return for
your cooperation, I am at your disposal to help you with your salary or
salaries for those you wish to hire. (For some reason, most university HR
departments will actually pay attention to my letter recommending a salary.)

We also need a fresh survey of rates for NMR use. Ron Garber was the
original keeper of the rate data but Vera Mainz did it in 1997. Vera? Will
you do it again?

I will post the results when they are complete.
