Hi Dan
We spent the last 2 years looking at Bench Tops from the major suppliers for
our teaching labs (chemistry majors and non-majors). They got a brand new
building and did not plan for the 300MHz system they currently used. We sent
out samples to several companies and found little difference in the spectra
at 80MHz. The teaching labs here run 1000 to 2000 samples a week (and increasing),
on 1000 sample weeks that is a 1H and 13C (20 min for both spectra) on a compound
and on the 2000 a week just 1H mainly. So we needed systems with large sample
changers this limited our options and eventually we went with the Bruker F-80
with 120 positions PAL robots. 4 have been installed and 1 was used last term,
the 5th should be here right as Fall starts and so hopefully all 5 will be used
this Fall. We found that for 1H in 16 scan you can easily get a spectra on 16mM
concentration samples, with 13C you need 0.5M or higher. These systems can do
2D so HSQC and things can work on lower concentrations. So the labs scaled up
so they can make the higher concentrations for the 13C.
So far we are pleased with the systems, for teaching. Trying to use them in
research would be a little more challenging but one could run the 2D and avoid
the 1D 13C they could work. Spectral dispersion would be your other concern for
research. Teaching you can always try other compounds if the dispersion was an
issue, we did send a specific sample that we were worried about when we had
samples run and it was fine for us.
Let me know if you have specific questions.
Greg
