Hi Ken
You are right up to the point that the spectrometer host is just a
dedicated front end and doesn't do much else. But if the Linux box is
networked into a complex system with some more colorful features (as it
happens in my case ) such as a LDAP backend for user authentication and
local cloud storage (within the University or commercial cloud services
such as AWS or Azure offered by the University) for data storage and
sharing, it becomes imperative that this Linux system is treated like a
server and patched and updated regularly.
If high availability and near-zero sysadmin maintenance is the goal,
then one can always deploy Topspin on a MS Windows 10/11 system, with the
caveat that the Windows machines themselves have some kind of enterprise
level IT support from the institution.
