Merck & Co., Inc. Kenilworth, N.J., U.S.A. known as Merck in the United States and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. The difference between potential and achievement lies in the spark that fuels innovation and inventiveness; this is the space where Merck has codified its legacy for over a century. Merck's success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare.
Merck is on a quest for cures and is committed to being the world's premier, most research-intensive biopharmaceutical company. Today, we're doubling down on this goal. Merck Research Laboratories is a true scientific research facility of tomorrow, and will take Merck's leading discovery capabilities and world-class small molecule and biologics R&D expertise to create breakthrough science that radically changes the way we approach serious diseases.
In this role you will be a member of a global Structure Elucidation (SE) team providing support to Merck's modality agnostic discovery and development pipeline. Work performed in the SE Group includes, but is not limited to, structure elucidation and characterization of compounds being synthesized by medicinal chemistry, support for process development, structure elucidation of metabolites for drug metabolism studies, and identification of process impurities, drug product degradants, and other unknowns. The chosen candidate will interact with a diverse array of world-class scientists in a professional work environment and will be focused on making impactful contributions to pipeline projects through NMR problem solving.
We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated individual, who, while capable of working independently, understands and values cross-functional team-work and our common mission to invent and develop new therapeutic solutions to unmet medical needs. You will collaborate with synthetic, purification, computational, analytical chemists and biochemists in solving challenging structural problems. The ideal candidate will have expertise in small molecule and peptide characterization using NMR spectroscopy. Experience in advanced molecular modeling methods and density functional calculations would be preferred.
Qualifications
Education Minimum Requirement:
* PhD in Chemistry or equivalent degree from an accredited university.
Required Experience and Skills:
* A minimum of 2 years of experience in structure elucidation with a proven track record of accomplishments in the area of small organic molecule and peptide structure elucidation (e.g., natural products, pharmaceuticals, etc.).
* Strong knowledge of organic chemistry, biochemistry or physical chemistry; experience in a medicinal or process chemistry environment is desirable.
* Comprehensive knowledge of NMR instrumentation, methodology and software.
* Skilled in the use and maintenance of Bruker, Varian or JEOL NMR software and hardware including cryoprobes and the application of NMR automation tools.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Collaboration-oriented and driven to continually work towards technical and process improvements.
* Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, and teamworking skills.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
* 4+ years in NMR
* Experience in mass spectrometry and chromatography is a plus.
* Technically inclined with the ability to troubleshoot complex instrument problems (e.g., automation, robotic systems, microfluidics, etc.).
* IT literate with the ability to manipulate data workflows in a networked environment (e.g., Windows and Linux OS, macros, scripts, etc.).
