AMMRL: data backup

Greetings!

I know this subject matter probably has been covered both in the ammrl
archives and MR News over the years (...and yes, call me lazy for not
looking!), but I'm looking for some current suggestions considering my
setup. Now that I finally have all my spectrometers running off of the
same hardware (Dell T3400/3500) and software (RH 5.x) I had purchased
another Dell T3400 with two RAID 1 TB drives for data processing and
data archival. This work station is pretty much a clean slate, just my
account and vnmr1 running VJ2.3A. (I do also have the /home directories
of the 3 spectrometers mounted in /mnt.) So I have two primary
questions/tasks at hand- how can I set up a weekly data dump from the
nmrs to the workstation, and moreover (and probably more open to debate)
where/how should I attempt to save it - which could bring up the
question of data ownership? On two of the spectrometers, data is saved
via research group linux/vnmrj accounts while on the 400, the primary
linux/vnmrj user is "walkup" used in automation. Simplistically, I could
just make 3 directories (simply named for each spectrometer) soley for
archival purposes on the workstation , dump the contents of /home there
and call it a day. Or can I (should I) get more sophisticated and try to
match data ownership and establish matching user accounts, directories,
etc on the workstation (if its really worth it?!)

And while I have your attention, one more quick question: the usb ports
on the spectrometer Dells occasionally go inactive (probably from users
not unmounting their thumb drives before removing?) - besides rebooting
the computer, how can you get them back active?

Thanks in advance for you comments and suggestion!
