AMMRL: Saving on liquid nitrogen consumption.

Hello AMMRL-ers,

We recently insulated all our liquid nitrogen
tr4ansfer pipes and flexible lines using the
black plastic-foam tube insulation used by air-
conditioning installation staff. The results are
startling with possibly up to 50 saving of liquid
nitrogen used and a similar saving in the time
taken to fill our magnets at the same propellant
gas pressure as previously without insulation.

Aircons want the liquid refrigerant gas to
evaporate in the aircon's evporator unit and not
in the supply pipes. We want the liquid
nitrogen to evaporate in the Magnet's nitrogen
dewar and not in the supply lines during filling.
Same problem: Same Solution.

We have insulated:

The line from the supplier's low-pressure
nitrogen tank to our fleet of atmospheric-
pressure dewars.

The delivery pipe on our atmospheric-pressure
dewars.

The flexible pipes used to fill our magnets.

Often the black insulating tube has a larger
internal diameter than the pipe or tube to be
insulated. We just close the ends down onto
the pipe with cable ties and so include some
trapped air in our insulating system. If you
would like some photos or further help with
insulating your system please feel free to
