Who has SSNMR? and Solid State NMR Rates Survey

Hi AMMRLers,

We are in the process of acquiring new solids hardware for a new faculty hire. We are getting a 500 MHz Phoenix 1.6 mm HXY probe, spins up to 40 kHz.

Of course, with any new capability, we need to develop a new rate structure for it. I’d be curious to know what your rates for solid-state NMR are and if the rates are any different compared to solution-state NMR, etc. The specific questions I have are:

1) If you have solids-capability, do you have dedicated solids instruments, or are some mixed solids/liquids systems in use?
2) In your facility, are the rates solid-state NMR different than solution-state NMR? If so, how do they differ? If you feel comfortable sharing the rate amounts, I would appreciate it.
3) For those with multiple magnets or probes, do you charge different rates for different field strengths or probes? (e.g., if you have a 500 MHz instrument vs 600 MHz, dual-channel vs triple-resonance, etc.). Again, if you feel comfortable sharing the rate amount, I would appreciate it.
4) Are research users allowed to do the hardware swaps (e.g., probe removal/swapping if required)? If not, do you charge for the staff-time involved?

I’d be happy to send out a summary email after collecting some responses! I’m curious how many NMR facilities have solid-state NMR capabilities. Thank you in advance!

Cheers,
Nanette
