Hi Everyone,
I really appreciated the following colleagues who shared the information and experience on the Bruker cryoplatform maintenance. They are Robert Peterson, Philip Dennison, Torbjörn Astlind, Bob Berno, Tianzhi Wang, Dean Olson and Jerry Hirschinger. Most of the sites would like to follow the maintenance interval suggested by Bruker, i.e., about a year or 10,000 running hours. One site let it ran successfully up to 23 months without maintenance. As suggested by Dean Olson, I posted the summary of the responses as follows:
1) We have tried to run our Bruker Cryoprobe past the 1-year service interval with only marginal success. The system has always run into problems before 18 months pass. The normal service call seems to get it going again, but the 1-year interval seems pretty justified in our experience. There are many companies capable of servicing the cryocabinet components, however only Bruker can operate the service software necessary to completely purge the impurities from the system and probe.
2) I have having one installed this year. Can you submit a written summary to AMMRL of what you learn?
Currently, the annual maintenance contract via Bruker is about $12,000.
3) I have service contract and maintain it yearly.
4) The recommended interval between cryoplatform maintenance is 10,000 operating hours. Since we operate our cryoprobes (we have a 2005 vintage TCI cryoprobe, and a 2009 vintage QNP-cryoprobe, both for 700MHz) continuously, we schedule the maintenance to happen every 13-months.
We have always used Bruker for the service: the Bruker Canada office is about 30-minutes away, so it is very convenient.
5) Greetings from Sweden,
We stick to the recommended, by Bruker, interval of 1 year or 10000 hours.
Our 2 cryoprobes are 6, and 8 (?) years old, maybe the recommended interval has changed?
When I asked about consequences of running overtime, I was warned about possible expensive repair/replacement of the turbo-pump, contamination of the vacuumspace, and major repair of the cryocooler.
When under warranty, it was absolutely required.
6) The specification is for a service after 10,000 hours. I usually let mine run for 13 months. I think it would be false economy to have anyone other than Bruker perform the service.
7) We always serviced ours every 14 months (about 10,000 hours). Recently we discovered that many people let them go longer - many go about 1.5 years, and a few people go as long as 2 years. So we've decided to let them go longer. Our 800 cryoprobe has gone about 23 months, and it has a service next week. So far it hasn't had any problems. Our 500 cryoprobe has gone about 18 months, and it also hasn't had any problems. We plan to do the service on that one in about 6 months.
This is the first time we've let them go longer than 14 months, so these are the only data points I have so far. We're a little nervous about letting them go so long between services, but we can't afford to do them every 14 months.

Hi Everyone,
How long a Bruker cryoplatform can run following a maintenance service at your facility? I also would like to find out how other NMR facilities maintain their cryoplatform. If you are willing to spare a few minutes, you can reach me at 909 569 5679.
Thanks in advance.

Have a nice weekend!
