AMMRL: remote X-sessions under linux

Darn! I forgot to put AMMRL in the subject line yesterday, so you're
probably only getting this now. I'm supposed to have this working by
Tuesday for organic chem lab.

I am working with Varian on this, but time is of the essence and
maybe one of you knows a quick fix.

PCs running X-Win32 in the student computer lab connect to my Solaris
machine using PuTTY for an SSH session. They select x)window and my
Solaris machine asks "input display server name" and the user enters
the IP address of the PC they are on. The user then issues the
command vnmrj and the software appears on the PC. This has worked
well for years.

I now have a Dell Precision 390n with RedHat 4.0u3 which was
installed using Varian's Factory Installation Software Kit
(01-918755-00-A). The Dell accepts the SSH connection and immediately
asks for the display server name (the .login files do not have
choices like Solaris .login files do). The user then issues the
command vnmrj - and nothing happens.

ps -uusername shows the username owning processes for shell and java,
but not for any vnmrj.

I have compared the .login files between the Sun and the Dell and the
script seems correct for an X-session on the Dell. I cannot blame the
problem on the student computer lab because the Ultra-10 still works
for the task, but it is an old computer and does not have the RAM or
processor power of the Dell and cannot support as many sessions as we
would like.

Both computers are connected via different ports to the same little
router, so the connection pathway is the same.

Thanks for any ideas,
Bill
