NMR Facility Manager
Chemistry and Biochemistry
The Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Lethbridge is
searching for an individual to manage the NMR facility which consists of
a four-channel (HFXY) Varian Unity INOVA 500 MHz wide-bore NMR
spectrometer and a Bruker Avance II 300 MHz NMR spectrometer. The INOVA
spectrometer is utilized by both solid-state NMR (chemical physics,
inorganic chemistry) and liquid-state NMR (protein structure,
multinuclear chemical and dynamics) investigators. With an unusually
large complement of solids probes dedicated to fluorine NMR (2.5 mm HFX;
3.2, 4.0, and 6.0 mm HFXY; and 4.0 and 7.5 mm HX MAS probes), this
instrument boasts experimental capabilities in solid state NMR unique to
Canada. The Avance is a liquids instrument used primarily for routine
inorganic and organic small molecule structure elucidation. Both
instruments are used in different aspects of the instructional programs
of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Department of Physics
and Astronomy and Department of Neuroscience. The appointment will be
held in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and will start on
or before July 1st, 2009. The appointment will be to an academic
position, classified as Academic Assistant (Academic Support Staff),
within the terms and salary scales of the current U. of L. Faculty
Handbook (

Duties of the position include: laboratory administration (usage
scheduling, cryogenics upkeep, etc.); maintenance of the instruments and
associated equipment and updating of related software tools; systems
administration; teaching and training of users (students, faculty and
research associates); and providing leadership in obtaining grants for
facility renewal. The most important aspect of this job will be to
facilitate the highest quality science, and to ensure that the facility
is managed in the most creative manner possible. An important aspect of
this job will be to promote the use of NMR within the broader community
leading to a significant growth in the user base, including if possible
users in local federal and provincial research labs and in industry.
While the Avance instrument is largely managed by users, repair and
advanced maintenance as well as assisting the users in the
implementation of new experiments on this spectrometer will be a
responsibility of the position. Collaborative research with faculty
members in the Faculty of Arts and Science is actively encouraged. The
ability to manage other related research equipment, and a knowledge of
electronics (especially RF) and Unix or Linux, are advantages.
Experience in solid-state NMR spectroscopy or in a related field is
required. Candidates for the position should have a track record working
in experimental solid-state NMR spectroscopy at a minimum to the level
of the M.Sc. or the equivalent in on-the-job training.
