I wanted to thank everyone for their assistance with my Solaris 2.6/7 issue
and thank you to those who sent me the needed files (Chris, William and
John). Specifically, I would like to thank Rolf Kyburz for his assistance.
It turned out that the wmptx file was missing and the Solaris/Unix software
was not generating a new one. So when I tried to open vnmr_accounting, the
file was not there for it to find. To make a very long story short, I ended
up reinstalling the operating system, installing the Solaris patches,
reinstalling the VNMR software and reinstalling the NMR patch. At this
point, everything is working beautifully and I have no complaints.

I have added the suggestions/comments that I received and at the bottom, my
original e-mail.

Again, thank you so much for all of the assistance!!!
Adrienne

Well you could bite the bullet and update to Solaris 9 where everything
currently works, even printing with the latest makePrinter patch.

I had the reverse problem: vnmr_accounting didn't work well under 6.1B on
Solaris 6, but did work when I upgraded to 6.1C and Solaris 8. (Let me know
if you start having problems with WET).

I can offer a workaround, but not an answer.

While vnmr_accounting wasn't working for me, I could accomplish the same
task without vnmr. The command
last console -250 produces a very similar output to the vnmr_accounting
log. Adjust the number (e.g. 250 above) to include the period you want, then
redirect output to a text file. The text file can be opened with Excel on a
PC (changing its extension is a little faster than the import dialog), where
you can have your way with sorting and multiplying etc. The vnmr_accounting
logfile was slightly easier, in that the unix output for multi-day runs,
when they occurred, had to be manually touched up.

Are you running Solaris 2,5, 2.6, 7, 8, 9 or 10? Solaris >= 8 use wtmpx,
not wtmp. The Vnmr accounting programs *with the latest patches* work on all
versions of Solaris (I reported many problems with their accounting
programs.). Solaris has bugs in the wtmp <-> wtmpx programs, so avoid using
them. To avoid confusing Vnmr, don't have both wtmpx and wtmp in /var/adm.
In Solaris 8, only wtmpx is used; use last -f /var/adm/wtmpx to see that it
is the one with the records.

Hi. Let me try to briefly explain my problem in the off chance someone else
has run into this. On Tuesday afternoon, the version of VNMR (6.1B) we were
using went crazy. Upon calling Varian, it was recommended that I upgrade to
6.1C and install the newest patch, so I did. Well, one of the problems I
have run into is that the Solaris 8 and the vnmr_accounting software
apparently don't like each other. I followed what was recommended by both
Varian and the bug list to fix the incompatibilities, but am not having any
luck.

I thought I would be sly and take the wtmp from my Sun at home that is
running Solaris 2.5.1 and put it on the Sun here. vnmr_accounting will open
with this file, but it won't recognize my users and it won't track the dates
and times.

At this point, according to the bug list, what I need to do is take the wtmp
file from my computer and alter it on a Solaris 2.6 or 7 machine. By any
chance are any of you still running in those environments? If so, would you
mind if I imposed and asked you to alter my file for me? I would gladly
send the instructions along with the file.

If you can help me out with either the file or a suggestion for fixing the
problem, I would be grateful. I will gladly post a summary.

Thanks,
Adrienne
