The Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking a highly motivated engineer or spectroscopist to fill the position of Magnetic Resonance Instrumentation Technologist, opening through retirement in January 2003. This is a permanent State of Wisconsin position, PVL # 43543, and carries with it excellent benefits. Salary will start at $41,000, depending on experience.
The Instrumentation Technologist is responsible for the maintenance of eight NMR spectrometers in our facility. This includes all aspects of this instrumentation including super-conducting magnets, consoles, probes, and associated computer controls. It is expected that all equipment will be kept within new-equipment specifications. An important part of the duties in this position is to run all applicable spectroscopic and electronic tests on a regular basis to verify and insure the proper operation of the spectrometers.
The Instrumentation Technologist will also assist other facility personnel in advancing state-of-the-art capabilities through new probe fabrication, probe modifications, and other innovations with the equipment.
The applicant must work well in a team, comprised of the NMR Director--who will be his/her immediate supervisor--the Assistant Director, and two half-time graduate assistants. Some direct interaction with faculty and students is expected, especially in the areas of equipment design and maintenance.
The ideal person in this position will have knowledge and experience in Rf electronics, computers, and cryogenics. In addition, some spectroscopy experience is desirable. The Instrumentation Technologist is expect to use advanced training opportunities--both in-house and vendor provided--and independent study, as needed, to obtain the skills needed to work on existing and newly acquired equipment in the facility.
