Many thanks to all who replied to my request for information on a
hoist for the installation of an Oxford 600AS magnet.
The most common suggestion was to rent the appropriate tripod with
hoist from Oxford. This is what we will do. It is too bad that this option
is not mentioned in Varian's installation planning guide, which states that
the lifting equipment is to be supplied by the customer.
These tripods (steel or aluminum) can be purchased from:
B. E. Wallace Products Corp., 71 Bacton Hill Rd., Frazer, PA 19355-1005
(1-800-553-LIFT).
or Spanco (www.spanco.com)
These companies, as well as McMaster Carr, can also supply gantry cranes and chain
hoists,
steel or aluminum.
Another option was to use an eyebolt fastened to the ceiling, but in our case lab
benches in the
floor above prevent us from easily drilling through the ceiling. If you are
fastening to
a ceiling, it is necessary to have some method of distributing the load over a
reasonable
area. A structural engineer can advise you on this,
Thanks again
