Dear AMMRL:
I am trying to connect my SUN Sparc 20 (later on it will be a Blade 2000) to
a PC so that when I obtain a spectrum on my Varian UNITY 500 I can
automatically send the spectral data through an ethernet to a PC (running
Windows XP) and have my ACD software perform various operations (i.e.,
spectral library search and printout of best match spectrum). I have heard
it is being done by some of you and I need some help "getting started"
started:
1. I have downloaded SAMBA's most recent tar.gz file onto a PC from the
internet (the SUN is not connected to the web). What do I do next? The
SAMBA instructions seem a little vague. Do I unzip it on my PC and then move
the SAMBA directory and its contents to the SUN or do I move the tar.gz file
as is and decompress it there?
Where should I put the tar file on the SUN; at the root directory
level or elsewhere?
Any other steps I must do before commencing the SAMBA instructions
(building the binaries, etc.)?
2. Anyone who has linked VNMR to ACD; what other items are needed to have it
work? Do I need a "task manager" to trigger the ACD to act when a spectrum
is sent to the PC? If so, what is the name of the software and the company
that made it (email or phone number would be helpful)?
As always, your help is greatly appreciated.
Happy New Year,
Patrick Hays
