Biocenter Oulu, affiliated to the University of Oulu, is a leading center
for bioscience in Finland. The University of Oulu is the second largest
university in Finland with an active scientific environment, and the Oulu
region has excellent connections to other cities. Biocenter Oulu contains
eleven project groups that have a broad base of expertise in molecular,
cellular and structural biology and biochemistry. For detailed
information on Biocenter Oulu, internet: http://www.oulu.fi/~biocweb.

POSITIONS IN STRUCTURAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Applications are invited for positions available in the Laboratory for
Structural Biological Chemistry, Biocenter Oulu, University of Oulu.
In 1998 a new four-channel 600 MHz NMR instrument will be installed
dedicated specifically to biomolecular NMR, as well as state of
the art equipment for protein crystallographic studies. Facilities
for computing, molecular biology, protein chemistry and organic
chemistry are excellent. The research will concern structural
biochemical studies including protein design and ligand design
approaches focusing on structure, dynamics and stability of proteins,
as well as on protein-ligand interactions, in particular
of enzymes of the (-oxidation pathway and enzymes involved in disulfide
coupled protein folding.

Positions in protein NMR

- 1 unix system manager for software and hardware support for the structural biology, and
- 2 postdoctoral positions.
Candidates should have a background in structure determination of proteins
by NMR spectroscopy; experience in the field of molecular biology is an
advantage. The project will concern NMR studies of enzymes involved in disulfide coupled
protein folding.

Positions in protein crystallography

- 1 position for a technical assistent for maintaining and operating equipment,
in particular the protein crystallography data collection equipment. This position
will require much interactions with other users.
- 1 position for a postdoctoral fellow with a background in molecular biology
to work on protein design studies (by modelling and screening approaches) of
monomeric triose-phosphate isomerase. This study is part of an EU-supported
network (http://www.embl-heidelberg.de/timbar/).
- 1 position for a postdoctoral fellow with a background in protein crystallography
to work on enzymes of the (-oxidation pathway, in particular concerning studies
aimed at a better understanding of the structure-function relationships of thiolase.

The work concerning these protein crystallography related positions will be done
at the EMBL until summer 1998.

The salaries will be based on qualifications and experience and the
appointments will be for two years. Financial assistence concerning the
relocation costs will be provided. Hiring will continue until all
positions are filled.

Applications with a CV and the names, addresses and phone numbers of three
referees to be sent by mail or e-mail to:
