I use the LLNL xdir program for data transfering. This program is more
than a GUI ftp interface, and it does transfer dir structures intact. I
have them compiled on SGI and Linux but it can run on virtually all
workstations. Check out the page at http://www.llnl.gov/liv_comp/xdir/

The file ownership issue can be solved by synchronizing UserID's on all
your workstations.

As for PC, it is not hard to run a ftpd, but the long filenames will be
trancated under DOS/Win31 (never used Windows0.95 :)
