AMMRL: thanks for your thoughts

I've heard from a number of colleagues, some previously unknown to me, and
my heart has been warmed by the response.

If anyone wants to chime in and/or applaud Bill McClellan's column (in the
interest of raising public awareness about the decline of higher education,
of course) those people can write to letters_at_post-dispatch.com

Attachments are not acceptable.

I would be astonished to see a single letter, unless it comes from someone
who has already suffered my fate - - so please don't stand up and be brave.
I survived a childhood of physical abuse, so I've never known how NOT to be
brave.

That conditioning made me a fighter and has probably cost me more than it
won me. The upside is that I have never been disappointed in myself wrt
calling them as I see them or choosing sides in the interest of expediency
vs what's right.

So, end of story, no amount of effort to provide as much service as
possible while undergoing two back surgeries (one hemilaminectomy and an
L4-L5 fusion a year later) was going to satisfy faculty and administrators
who place a premium on having their butts kissed.

Not like 20 years ago when they were happy that someone with knowledge and
growing experience was taking care of things. I've started to wonder
whether higher ed is really becoming a victim of itself.

Thanks again,
Bill
