Dear AMMRL,
For first year graduate students specializing in organic chemistry our
Chemistry department has a lecture/lab course that covers various
spectroscopic methods, with a very heavy focus on NMR. The lab is devoted
primarily to NMR, with hands-on instruction in use of the spectrometers at
300-600 MHz. The students learn to run various 1D and 2D sequences on
standard samples. We like to complement this with the students running
some unknown samples with these methods and analyzing the spectra, but we
haven't been very satisfied with how this has worked out.
So here is the query: can people send me suggestions on samples that work
well for students at this level to run and analyze by 1D and 2D
NMR? Alternatively, are there other sorts of lab exercises that students
in this group (organic chemists) and at this level could benefit from,
something more challenging than just running standard samples?
