Our colleagues in the Physics department just received a 100-liter liquid
helium dewar from an un-named supplier with the upper ball valve &
fittings broken off. There is no obvious boil-off, but there is clearly
an ice-block about 16-inches down.
Is this a bomb waiting to go off?
The supplier [whose logo is a white bear] has been extremely un-responsive
to coming back to deal with the problem. They had delivered the dewar to
the lab earlier this morning... and incomprehensively had not noticed the
damage.
