Dear Colleagues:
Thanks for your input. As several people pointed out, Solaris
9/VNMR 6.1C are completely compatible. As pointed out by Rolf, my
original problems with autoshimming was simply not setting the probe
variable (i.e. probe='probe' in the command line). I had one response
telling me to stay at Solaris 8 -> it is fully patched and hackers tend
to leave old operating systems alone. To be frank, I really not into
upgrading OSs just for the hell of it. However, the hacker corrupted
the last and other commands to the point where vnmr_accounting would not
work, and since I have to now start charging inhouse users and I wanted
to upgrade the drives I thought this would be an excellent opportunity.
Now, for the my latest problem: Trying to add my LaserJet 2100M to
the Solaris/VNMR has been a challenge. My travails are
a) Started by using adddevices. Whenever I tried to create a
printer I get the following error:
Error: lpadmin: ERROR Missing -U or -v option
TO FIX: Local printers must have a port defined (-v
option) or have dial-out instructions (-U option)
b) Okay, so I tried to create a printer for Solaris using lpadmin.
Using the command
lpadmin -p solprint -v /dev/ecpp0 -T PS -I postcript
generated this error
UX:lpadmin: ERROR: "/dev/ecpp0"
is a symlink that points to a file with a different owner.
TO FIX: Retry this operation
with a new device.
This error, which is due to VNMR, is summarized in this link:
http://supportforum.sun.com/salerts/index.php?t=msg&th=605&start=0&rid=0
c) Using the information, I was able to add a Solaris printer using
lpadmin. I then created a printer and plotter for VNMR by editing the
devicenames file and
using the following:
lpadmin -p printer -v /dev/ecpp0 -T PS -I postscript
lpadmin -p plotter -v /dev/ecpp0 -T hplaser -I simple
After editing the
/etc/lp/printers/{printer/plotter}/configuration files to make sure the
banner option was no, I started VNMR. I was able to print text no
problem, but now my plotter ejects an extra page after
every plot. To remedy this, I have tried:
editing vnmrplot, adding -oraw to the lp command;
installing makePrinter: Although the script
would run, the confirm/deny buttons were always grayed out, and I
couldn't create printers/plotters;
editing the /etc/lp/printer configuration file,
added raw option.
Any advice concerning this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill
