Extension Cords on a UPS

We have two SGI O2's in adjacent rooms, and in a third room we have one SGI
Indy and a Sun. I would like to buy two UPS systems and put the two O2's
on one and the Indy and the Sun on the other. The combined wattage is way
below the rating for the UPS (1000VA, 670W APC 1000XLNET) but APC says not
to use extension cords on a UPS. The cords would be about 12 feet long if
the UPS were sited in the middle between the two computers. My limited
understanding of electronics tells me that the UPS is sensing problems
upstream from the computer and wouldn't really care how the computer is
connected to the UPS. There may be, of course, electrical code violations
which is another issue. The UPS manufacturer has a strong economic
interest in convincing us to use one UPS for each computer. Does anyone
have more trustworthy information than that provided by APC?
