takes one to know one (job posting)

Although this is a little far afield, I would like to ask AMMRL members to
bring this position to the attention of postdocs, graduate students, or
others you may know who you think might be successful and satisfied in
running a service facility for molecular graphics and modeling. IMHO,
this is enough like running an NMR lab that you would recognize good
candidates.
The ad copy below will run in C&EN in late February. There's a reference
to a web page with a complete position description, to which I would
append the following: we have a newly constituted unit, the Molecular
Structures Group, with Ph.D. level directors for the NMR, MS, X-Ray, and
Molecular Graphics Labs. The labs all have a campus-wide clientele. The
directors report into the research office (bypassing department chairs),
and generally have one or more adjunct appointments in academic
departments. In addition to keeping things running and training students,
directors are expected to be good collaborators, publish, and participate
in grant funded projects as investigators (can be PI's as well). There
are many collaborative opportunities in chemistry, pharmacy, biology, and
potentially at the KU Medical Center. Although there aren't any
quantitative measures, I would say that our local coefficient-of-prima-
donna-hood is delightfully low.
Our NMR (yours truly) and MS lab directors have more than ten years of
experience; we are now completing our search for a crystallographer with a
highly experienced candidate "on the hook." We'll be installing more than
$2 million worth of new NMR and MS instruments this year, and are eager to
get the molecular modeling facility stoked up, too. I think this is an
opportune time for a computational chemist to join us.
Thanks for passing this information on to qualified applicants.
