AMMRL:

I am admittedly new to NMR but have been working in various forms of high
technology since 1976. I may not know where NMR is heading directly but it
should follow the same similar trends that most high technology has. So I'll
make a few educated (or uneducated) guesses:

The computers will have in the near term at least low order AI (artificial
intelligence) and the software also will have elements of AI.

Computational power of the workstations will multiply not factorially but
exponentially and we will have stacked arrayed multiprocessors.

The electronics will begin to exhibit AI qualities ... failure detection
correction and etc.

G-Hz field strengths will be commonplace (10 yr.).

Coaxial wires will be replaced by wave guide on the probes and in the consoles in
research instrumentation as frequencies extend into the microwave region.

Tabletop NMR units in the future will begin to have the same specs' as production
grade instruments do today.

Even though higher temperature superconductors will exist ... the threat of
quenching will still be just as real from cascaded localized heating ... and the
magnets may still be bathed in cryogen (or coolants) to protect from the quench.

Salaries with get much better for NMR professionals able to learn with the
changes an sort out the varied technological dialects (I like this one the
best!).

We will still worship the gods of shimming!
