There was some discussion about the influence of fringe fields on CRT
displays. In our lab, the console for the DRX-500 is only nine feet from
the magnet bore leading to some distortion and color changes. Sheet metal
placed alongside the CRT helped but our EH&S folks objected to the potential
safety hazard. We replaced the standard SGI monitor with an NEC LCD 1810
flat panel display. It is crisp, clear, (1280x1024 resolution), not
influenced by the magnet field but not cheap. The 1810 is actually 1" wider
in the display area than the standard 17" CRT.
