Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone is using NIS for user accounts with a
spectrometer running TopSpin 4?
I've been using NIS for nearly 20 years for 300 users to connect to 4
spectrometers and 9 processing computers without issues. A mixture of
Irix/XwinNMR3.5 and CentOS5/TopSpin3.2 for acquisition and
Irix/XwinNMR3.5 and CentOS7/TopSpin4 for processing.
Now I am trying to incorporate a new NEO400 from a neighboring facility
into the system.
Everything works, except for data acquisition. If I run an experiment
from an NIS account, the screen messages are all normal and the
acquisition screen shows data. But at the end of the experiment no data
is saved to the workstation although the parameters are updated as normal.
The TopSpin message when the data is stored reads 'saved in
/root/.topspin-BladeEpu/local+acqu/expname/expno...' instead of the
user's data directory.
I believe this means the data is stored within the console and then
should be mirrored to the workstation, but it is not.
It has been suggested to me that this could be due to user group
membership or homedir location, I will experiment with various options
but wonder if anyone has a solution already.
Currently my NIS users are in group ID 999 called nmruser. One
suggestion is to look at the user called 'nmr' supplied with the system
and use the same group name and ID. This is currently in group ID 1001
which has no name. I may have changed this in the /etc/group file as I
had no plans to use that account. All my testing with the local nmrsu
account was successful.
My home directories are all on a remote server, mounted as /nmr/username
and the data is stored to that same server. I did test if using a local
data directory made any difference, and it did not.
