Dear fellow NMR lab managers,
I am wondering if any of you have encountered the following problem in
creating user accounts on a Varian Inova using VnmrJ 3.2A. We have a
'hp Z400' pc, with RHEL 6.1 and GNOME desktop 2.28.2.
Since I started my position here back in April, the VnmrJ Admin software
has been quite flakey, and I have issues with creating user accounts.
The basic problem is that after opening 'vnmrj adm' and clicking on 'new
user', then type in the new user login, followed by filling out the
'name' info and making sure that the 'spectroscopy' button is clicked; I
need to click on "Save User" for the account creation to happen (and for
VJ to be properly configured in the user's account). A second or two
after clicking 'save user', the 'vnmrj adm' software crashes and the
account does not get properly made (ie. the new user does not appear in
the list of users that is in the VnmrJ admin window).
The interim person before me would then delete the 4 files that did get
created for the new user, and start over. Sometimes this would work and
I have been successful in creating 10-15 accounts, but as of late, the
VJ Admin window crashes every time! The interim person also tried to
figure out what series of clicks and entries makes it crash. One
solution was to reboot the computer prior to making a new user, which
seems ridiculous to me, and now even this solution doesn't work.
I have tried to create accounts the old way, by first creating a Linux
account for the new user, and putting this user in the 'nmr' group. I
would then go to /vnmr/bin and use the ./makeuser command, however VJ
doesn't get properly set up in the new user's account (we used this with
Vnmr, though evidently it may not work with VJ). Logging in as the new
user and then double-clicking on the VJ icon, results in an error GUI,
stating that the user is not in the /vnmr/adm/users/userlist file.
If anyone knows of a work around in creating new accounts for VnmrJ 3.2A
users, I'd appreciate hearing from you. My new NMR users would like
their own accounts... :-)
Happy winter!
Monika
