I know how to do this and it does give one a sense of satisfaction to be so
smart that you can make it work. On the other hand, you can get a LinkSys
router for $89.94 at Staples or wherever. It swallows ping requests, maps
ports, and even lets you put a host in the DMZ - and any idiot can
configure it with a web browser. By using hubs, it'll support 254 hosts.
For about $200 you can get all this plus wireless. Oh, and they'll both do
DHCP.

My home network is on DSL and I have the router serving a Win98 machine
(auntbee), a freeBSD machine (otis) , a linux (6.2 RedHat) box (gomer) and
a SPARC 5 (goober). Ports 21, 23, and 80 map to the linux box which, of
course, has built in tcp wrappers which keep most nosies out of 21 and 23.
You can hit http://labmanagers.d2g.com on port 80. (See dns2go for free
domain names.)

When I want an X-session from home to my NMR Facility, I temporarily put my
SPARC in the DMZ and hide it again when I'm done. It is not too
inconvenient. If I have to hit goober from work, I just go through gomer
which I can do because siu.edu is permitted to connect to gomer.

For 90 bucks, you save a lot of trouble.
