Hi everyone,
Thank you so much for the great responses! I have super appreciated all the
input as I continue to pursue data sharing.
I wanted to follow up to see if anyone has experienced any security breaches
to their systems? My biggest fear with all of this is a hacker infiltrating
the system. Do you have your computer that is controlling the NMR directly
connected to the internet or do you have an alternate system or network to
help protect the spectrometer more fully?
The other hang-up I am having pertains to the eventual (hopeful) push to
extending the data sharing to the entire facility. We have a Bruker AutoFlex
Max MALDI-TOF that supports MALDI imaging and as we begin to introduce this
to users, we are going to have the problem of incredibly large file sizes
(from my understanding, they can reach the Tb threshold though I have not
actually seen the raw data file examples yet). So, likely something like a
data server will be necessary.
Thanks again and happy Wednesday!

Hello all!
I would prefer the ‚rsync‘ utilities in CentOS or some extra tools in Windows.
The trouble is hidden in the details. If the there is breakdown somewhere, then the troubles starts.
If the spectrometer is up and the storage is down - there is no backup on the storage. You have to
do it manually.
The rsync is a good toolbox to get the traffic down. It syncs every 5, 10 or 15 minutes, if you want.
It also has a closer look, if there was an interruption in between. It syncs the data - so everywhere
is the correct duplicates. This takes a bit time for configuration, but this saves a lot of troubles.
The ‚syncing‘ routines in TopSpin or IconNMR are only rudiments of the real stuff!
Yours sincerely,
Ulrich Haunz

Hi Jessica
I use an in-house FTP server for distributing (raw, uncompressed or compressed
archives) data to internal users. I use OneDrive (OneDrive and Teams are little
more than a facelift for SharePoint) for distributing data (only as compressed
archives) to external users. OneDrive access by external users is read-only.
OneDrive usually works with Windows10 but I have given up trying to use OneDrive
with Linux (too many problems). Windows7 & OneDrive are no longer compatible.
I recently tried (unsuccessfully) to use OneDrive as a cloud service for all
users (internal and external) but encountered serious performance issues and
some data corruption when the archive exceeded 300'000 files (this is a documented
limitation of OneDrive/SharePoint).
Are you aware of ICON's data-to-email function?
Regards,
Craig.

Hi everyone,
I am in the process of setting up some way for researchers to access their
data remotely. Currently all students save their data to a thumb drive from
the local NMR PC. I have been looking into different ways of setting this
up. I thought about a shared data server, however OneDrive keeps popping up.
Apparently, you can set up a group on OneDrive, give them read only access,
and they can access folders using their university login credentials. Our IT
department seems to be pretty positive about the idea but I wanted to check
with you all as well to see how you allow your users remote access. We also
have a few mass spec instruments in the facility and are hoping to purchase
another NMR in the near future, so I would like to get something that would be
feasible for multiple instruments. Has anyone been utilizing a cloud sharing
service like OneDrive? Is it secure? Are there any concerns with data leaking
or loss or other security issues I should worry about with regards to protecting
the instrument? What other ways have been used for remote data access that you
might recommend?
Thank you all in advance!
