Re: [AMMRL] Data sharing- On Linux Using SSH, Remote Drive Mount Shares & rsync cron scripts

Jessica;

We still have a couple Varian/Agilent instruments and some Brukers too. I created
a trust relationship between all these Linux workstation’s data folders
and another backup server using SSH protocols and remote drive mount shares.
Then I created a cron job that runs a transfer script on each machine in the
middle of the night to transfer the data folders recursively to the backup
server using rsync protocols. This interval can be set to whatever but I worry
that it might interfere with data acqusition if done during busy times of the
day. Therefore we have a single folder with all instrument data on a UF chemistry
department’s data server in one secure location that can then be ported
to Onedrive or another cloud based solution.

As far as policy goes, even though it is each users responsibility to save their
own data, we do not delete data off the workstations unless absolutely necessary.
We provide the backups to our students, faculty and other clients. The data are
UF properties and we are required to preserve it by NIH, NSF and UF rules. I
wrote a procedure on how this was acomplished, that I’m willing to share
with the group. I am very impressed so far with the solutions that others in the
group have for using Onedrive or other cloud solutions. We want to do this too
and we are following along closely. Having the data on a separate server will
make it so the cloud backups will not interfere with the instruments and protect
the data because it will be saved in 3 locations.

This is a Ghz class benchtop actively shielded NMR spectrometer not yet at =
field that uses room temperature superconductor solenoids. This is what we =
have to look forward to. 😉

Subject: [AMMRL] Data sharing

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of setting up some way for researchers to access their
data remotely. Currently all students save their data to a thumb drive from
the local NMR PC. I have been looking into different ways of setting this
up. I thought about a shared data server, however OneDrive keeps popping up.
Apparently, you can set up a group on OneDrive, give them read only access,
and they can access folders using their university login credentials. Our
IT department seems to be pretty positive about the idea but I wanted to
check with you all as well to see how you allow your users remote access.
We also have a few mass spec instruments in the facility and are hoping to
purchase another NMR in the near future, so I would like to get something
that would be feasible for multiple instruments. Has anyone been utilizing
a cloud sharing service like OneDrive? Is it secure? Are there any concerns
with data leaking or loss or other security issues I should worry about with
regards to protecting the instrument? What other ways have been used for
remote data access that you might recommend?

Thank you all in advance!
Jessica
