I hope this informal request for information finds you and yours doing well!
It has been 10 years since the National Academy of Sciences looked at "High
Magnetic Field Science and Its Application in the United States" (link below).
NMR is certainly in scope under this wider umbrella.
The question for the current committee to address is: What are existing and
emerging scientific opportunities enabled by high magnet fields? (link with
more details below).
This is a forward-looking study on high magnetic field science and technology
will identify new scientific opportunities enabled by existing and emerging
high magnetic field technologies for the next decade and beyond.
If you are willing, your views on any, all, or beyond the following suggested
questions are most welcome for timely consideration:
Specific questions of interest
1. Please provide a bit of background information about your magnet lab,
your numbers and who you represent:
* Number of high field magnets, at which fields?
* Number of scientists using your facility?
* Which scientific disciplines do they come from?
* Funding source for your instruments (government agencies or other institutions?
And if willing, how much money and/or percentages of instrument costs)
* Type of payment structure? (Free vs user fees; operation funding model)
* Number of support staff?
1. Your views on:
* Impact of data generated and scientific return on financial investment for
high-magnetic-field-dependent science?
* Likelihood to be superseded by alternatives to high-magnetic-field-dependent
technologies, and where not?
* Future applications beyond today's conventions?
* Gaps in access to high-magnetic-field-dependent instrumentation for data generation?
* Approaches/solutions to closing those gaps?
* Training of next generation scientists and technologists in the field?
