Hi AMMRL.

I need help averting disasters with inadvertent shutdowns of my spectrometer computer. The KDE interface for CentOS 7 I just installed makes it easy to shut down the computer, but complicated to log out of a user account. I now have two aims with which I need help:
- Completely disabling the easy shut-down capability
- Making it easier for users to simply log out of their account.

I just gave one spectrometer a new hard drive and installed CentOS 7 + Topspin 3.6.2 from a disk image. On this instrument, every user has their own linux account, complete with their own Desktop. This environment includes a funny little box/button named “Desktop" in the upper-right corner, and clicking it yields a menu with number of irrelevant choices except for the “Leave” button. Clicking “Leave” immediately shuts down the computer with no additional dialog, which is troubling.

I would like to either:
- swap out the “Leave” button for a “Log out” button
- OR delete the “Leave” button
- OR get rid of this “Desktop” box/button entirely
How do I do it? I’ve been poking around a lot of the system preferences, and I can’t find any references to this funny “Desktop” box/button/menu.

I would also like to make it easier for people to log out, preferably with one button in an obvious location that provides an “are you sure?” dialog to prevent inadvertent exit. The current workflow is “click the thing in the lower-left corner”, “awkwardly hover over the red Leave button”, then “choose the “Log Out” option from among the many options.”

Surely there is a better way. What is it, and how do I set it up? I’d appreciate some help from someone with more CentOS 7 / KDE experience than I have.

Thanks for your help. - Josh
