I'm trying to set up a user-friendly system for routine 1H and 13C spectra on a Mercury-400, running VNMR. We could also upgrade it to VNMR-J but haven't tried that yet.
Bruker has a very good autolock that uses a lock parameter table, and finds the 2H frequency by acquiring a 2H spectrum. It takes about 30 seconds. Varian has a "lock" command that is supposed to find the 2H resonance and then optimize lock power, lock gain and lock phase. In my experience, it always fails. On the Mercury 400, it shows "Finding Res", then "Adj Lock Power", then "Finding Res", then "Adj Lock Phase", then back to "Finding Res". It loops back and forth among these processes and after about 4 minutes has apparently made no progress. Is there any way to make it work?
I also thought about writing a macro that asks for the solvent and then sets the lock parameters from a table (that we create and maintain). But I can't find any way to turn on the lock in a macro.
Any help would be appreciated. Why can a Varian be made to act like a Bruker?
