I regret to inform the group that Albert "Ron" Garber, passed away on the morning of August 14th. He is survived by his wife Terry . The funeral arrangements will be held in Memphis TN on Thursday August 16. A memorial service in Columbia SC will be on Sunday August 19. Please contact me if you are interested in the details.
Ron held my position for over 20 years and was one of the founding members of AMMRL. While I was also attended that first meeting at Asilomar, Ron was one of the outspoken and driving forces in the early years of this group. I did not succeed him directly (Jeff Simpson was here for just over a year), but I met Ron my first weekend at USC (1997). I did not know Ron very well, in fact I only had lunch with him a few times. He left the department under very strained relations so perhaps he never wanted to be seen in the building. I do regret not being able to mend these old scars that developed because he was an exceptionally smart individual that had much to offer.
After retiring from the NMR position here he earned a degree in computer science and worked a couple of years before he started having health problems. His health continued to worsen over the last decade, in fact he suffered very badly his last few years. Please remember him for being an important member of this group, which might not exist if not for him.
