Just a heads-up for VnmrJ users who regularly update their RedHat/CentOS
systems as I do:
Last week I applied the lastest Redhat RHEL 5.x updates only to discover
that VnmrJ (3.2, 2.2D) was broken. The base VnmrJ window opened but would
hang at the "Initializing" state and not further populate any of the
menus. This behavior was similar to previous issues where the hostname
was not configured exactly to the liking of VnmrJ and Postgres (pgsql).
"kill -KILL" was required to terminate VnmrJ.
I tried backing out the Redhat updates that included
sudo-1.7.2p1-14.el5_8.2.x86_64, but this did NOT solve the problem. Note
the previous version of sudo worked fine (sudo-1.7.2p1-13.el5.x86_64)
To make a long story short, this morning waiting in my email inbox was a
Redhat"RHN Errata Alert:
"RHBA-2012:1160-1 - sudo bug fix update"
========================================
* The RHSA-2012:1149 sudo security update introduced a regression
that caused the permissions of the /etc/nsswitch.conf file to
change during the installation or upgrade of the sudo package.
This could cause various services to be unable to access the file.
In reported cases, this bug prevented PostgreSQL from starting.
This update fixes the bug and the file's permissions are no longer
changed in the described scenario. (BZ#846974). All users of sudo
are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which fix this bug.
========================================
The NEW sudo update sudo-1.7.2p1-14.el5_8.3.x86_64 did indeed solve the
problem.
