A continuing NMR Technical Officer position is open in the
supramolecular nanoscale assembly group (SNAG) at the NRC National
Institute for Nanotechnology in Edmonton. This position would be focused
on maintaining a 600 MHz Varian spectrometer as well as performing a
variety of NMR experiments as part of the SNAG research program. Listed
below are some of the key activities of this job.

Upkeep and maintenance of a high field NMR spectrometer. This activity
includes: (a) regular cryogen fill-ups (liquid helium and nitrogen); (b)
regular software upgrades; (c) ensuring normal operation of the
instrument (d) diagnosing and solving any operational problems with
Varian and other NMR experts; (e) training of students on advanced NMR
techniques; (f) maintaining data and ensuring secure archives; (f)
keeping up to date with the latest NMR techniques.

Performance of multi-dimensional NMR experiments on various compounds
and careful analysis of spectral data (e.g. 1D NMR: 1H, 13C, 31P, 15N,
19F, APT; Through-bond 2D NMR: COSY, TOCSY, 2D-INADEQUATE; Through-space
2D NMR: NOESY, ROESY; Heteronuclear coupling (1H/15N, 1H/13C): HSQC,
HMQC, HMBC; Diffusion measurements: Pulsed Gradient Spin Echo and Pulsed
Field Gradient Stimulated Spin Echo).

Generation of detailed technical reports.

Other duties:

Upkeep and maintenance of the laboratories. This activity includes the
upkeep and maintenance of organic laboratory equipment such as the
solvent purification system, vacuum pumps, rotavaps, the chemical
inventory, MSDS database, laboratory safety and organization, ordering
bulk chemicals and solvents, etc.

Responsible for scale up synthesis of key target molecules developed by
the SNAG or reported in the chemical literature. This activity includes
(a) successfully carrying out the synthesis and structure elucidation of
the target molecules; (b) obtaining, compiling and summarizing
scientific literature relevant to the target molecules using the
University of Alberta Library, CISTI, Web of Science, or SciFinder as
