Hello All
Thank-you to all who responded (too many to list individually) to my query about the overheating shims. From many suggestions, the problem (barring a physical fault) is that sometimes the gradient shimming gets a little creative with unusual sample conditions and may push some of the higher order shims to maximum or near maximum values. Under these conditions, there is a remarkable amount of heat generated.
Something which many of you seem to be unaware of is the existence of a Bruker AU program to read the shim temperature, "coiltemp" - many thanks to Edwin at Bruker-DE for pointing this out.
Craig.
