DVD Drive vs. Tape Drive

Hello to everyone. This afternoon our tape drive died on our Sun Blade 100.
I have been taking it apart and helping it limp along, but it is now
officially a goner, I can do no more. The drive is an external drive and is
quite old at this point (it was originally attached to a SPARCstation 5).

So, I approached my manager with the thought of buying a new tape drive and
he suggested I look at a DVD burner instead. He says the DVD will hold
~4.5GB and would allow me to cheaply back up system files. A year and a
half ago, I purchased a CD Burner for the Sun and the computer developed a
passionate dislike for it (although the manufacturer stated it was Unix
compatible). The CD burner is now attached to my PC and I have to FTP over
my data files to back them up. So, I am quite hesitant to get involved in
spending the money for the burner and have the Sun develop a dislike for it.

My questions to you are as follows:

1. Do you prefer tape or DVD to back up system files? Would you even back
up system files to a DVD (I am not that familiar with DVD drives or
burning them)?
2. If you have installed a DVD drive on a Sun Blade 100, which one did you
buy and how hard/easy was the process?

I will gladly post a summary if there is interest in me doing so.

Thank you in advance.
Adrienne
