All,

I did not receive many replies. The following is what I did receive. If anyone has anything to add to this I will put out a subsequent summary. Thanks to those that replied.

1) From Bruker software support service department:
I can confirm, that our future software development will not contain the operating system Irix anymore. In autumn we will release another minor update (version 3.5) that will be also available for SGI, but this will be definitively the last version.
You will be glad with Linux as operating system, it is much faster and more convenient than Irix!

2)if you are using red hat linux 7.3 there will be some items that are inconsistencies with our installation guide that is written for 7.1 .
One issue is the graphics configuration. In addition to the changes
described in the Installation Guide you have to also disable the loading
of the direct rendering module. Near the top of the file
/etc/X11/XF86config-4 you have to comment out the line
Load "dri" ......
3)Thanks, Kurt. Our Bruker service people highly recommend Linux over Windows. I guess we will switch.

4)In principle all works fine. But depending on the some external factors you might experience some trouble.
1. Booting from the Linux-PC
By no means every CCU is suited to boot from the Linux-PC. Bruker has a long list, which CCU you can use. If you haven't the correct CCU, you have to eachange this part for comparative low price.
2. Booting from the Linux-PC, part II
Maybe the new CU (if necessary) comes with a wrong netmask.
0xffff0000 will work with SGI computers but not with the Linux-PC. You need a serial connection to the monitor port of the CCU to correct this (setenv netmask 0xffffff00).
3. Booting from the Linux-PC, part III
In one case I got a replacement CCU which was not set to autoboot. Same as above, set the environment parameter autoboot to the correct value (sorry I forgot the correct entry, maybe a).
4. Booting from the Linux-PC, part iV
You need bootparamd. Usually this starts form /etc/inetd.conf.
In some distributions this method fails. If you have trouble,
try to comment out the line with bootparamd within /etc/inetd.conf
(don't forget killall -HUP inetd) and start bootparamd manually
        /usr/sbin/bootparamd -bootparam
5. Graphics
It is really a nice game to patch the /etc/X11/XF86Config. -( I recommend to use a CRT monitor for the first attempts. LCD screens are much more sensitive against misconfigurations of the X-Server and maybe you see nothing after the configurations orgy due to a too high vertical frequency. Mst LCD monitors accept up to 70 Hz only.
6. Shell
Either start the XWIN-NMR installation program from a bash or modify the distribution, if you want to use a csh.
You have to insert the line
        #!/bin/sh
        into the file
xwinstall.d/modscripts/nmrguide.pre as the first line. Otherwise the installation of the NMR guide will fail. Of course you have to copy the CD to a hard disk for this operation. -)
7. Additional recommendations
Install some editors. jedit, xedit, nedit are fine. To use a SuSe distribution some more modificatons would be necessary.

Best Regards,
Kurt
